GenIA-L Receives ICAEW Technology Accreditation

We’re pleased to share that GenIA-L has received Technology Accreditation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), following an independent technical review carried out by RSM on ICAEW’s behalf.

For accountants and tax professionals exploring how AI can support their work, trust is a fundamental consideration. It’s not simply about how quickly an AI tool can produce an answer, but where that answer comes from, whether it can be verified and how responsibly the technology has been built.

That’s why this accreditation is an important milestone for GenIA-L.

What did the ICAEW accreditation assess?

As part of the accreditation process, GenIA-L underwent an independent technical review covering areas including data provenance, responsible AI governance and the reliability of its underlying technical infrastructure.

The assessment looked at three key areas:

Data provenance
GenIA-L uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology and is grounded in verified legal, tax and compliance content. Its answers can be traced back to their source, allowing users to check the information behind the response.

Responsible AI principles
Governance, transparency and safeguards form part of how GenIA-L operates and is maintained, helping professionals use AI with greater confidence.

Technical reliability
The underlying infrastructure and processes supporting GenIA-L were assessed against ICAEW’s requirements for accredited technology.

Why does independent accreditation matter?

AI is becoming increasingly common within accountancy and tax, but not every AI tool works in the same way.

For professionals dealing with tax, employment law and compliance questions, a plausible-sounding answer isn’t enough. They need to understand what information an answer is based on and be able to verify it before relying on it.

ICAEW Technology Accreditation provides additional independent assurance for firms considering GenIA-L as part of their professional workflows.

As Duncan Callow, Managing Director at Indicator, explains:

“This accreditation matters because it’s independent scrutiny of exactly the things our customers rely on us for: that GenIA-L's answers are grounded in verified content and can be traced back to source. In a market where AI tools are increasingly being pointed at professional advice, that distinction is critical. We're proud that the ICAEW has recognised the work our team has put into building GenIA-L responsibly, and we see this as validation of the approach we've taken from day one: trusted content, not just a confident-sounding model.”

Trusted content, supported by AI

GenIA-L has been designed around a simple principle: AI should make trusted professional content easier to access, not replace the expertise behind it.

It combines AI technology with Indicator’s verified tax, HR, health and safety, legal and compliance content, helping professionals find relevant information quickly while retaining the ability to check the sources behind an answer.

The ICAEW Technology Accreditation adds to GenIA-L’s existing accreditation from the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) and provides further independent recognition of our approach to responsible, source-grounded AI.
